Named   distillery items

I am delighted that a growing number of named distilleries (and now also cooperages) are making their spent whisky barrel wood available to me to craft unique items for the benefit of charity.

To date, I have established links with the Tamdhu, Glengoyne, Glenfiddich and Balvenie  distilleries, as well as the Macallan cooperage and Chivas Brothers - all of which have provided me with wood for making bespoke items in exchange for a donation to charity.  In addition to wood, the Glengoyne, Glenfiddich and Balvenie distilleries have very generously made available to me at cost price distillery etched tasting glasses.  This means that I am now able to offer those asking for wood items from these distilleries up to two of these glasses at no charge if they are ordering items designed to take these glasses.

Another local distillery which uses only sherry casks would like to help me but currently has a commercial contract for all their spent cask wood to be used in curing smoked salmon.  However, when the current contract ends they hope to be able to supply some material to me.  With the encouragement and support of the Scotch Whisky Association discussions are underway with a number of other distilleries and I hope to be able to add further distillery cask woods to my collection for crafting in the near future.

For now , from my various sources I can offer bespoke items made with wood from the following distilleries:-

I will update the list above as more becomes available or unavailable.  As these woods are limited in supply, I am asking for more generous donations to charity and these will be discussed on an item by item basis when interest is expressed.

Foraging for whisky barrel wood at the Tamdhu distillery.  There were some wonderful pieces to be found!  Examples of the items made from the Tamdhu and other named distilleries are shown in the photographs below.

This Chanukiah was made from a very large Tamdhu sherry cask stave.  Each stave is approximately 1.4m in length and the central part is the most dramatically curved section.  What you see here is the natural colour of the wood after it is oiled with a colourless finish.  It looks wonderful!

This flight tray was custom made using part of a Glengoyne distillery cask end.  It was specially prepared to hold two Glengoyne whisky tasting glasses and a bottle of Glengoyne  18 year old whisky.  The tray and glasses are now on the way from Scotland to Japan to someone  for whom  the 18 year old Glengoyne  is their favourite whisky.

I recently visited the Glengoyne distillery to buy and collect the Glengoyne whisky tasting glasses which were generously offered by the distillery.  Whilst there, I presented them with this flight tray made with their wood and which the distillery will auction or raffle to support a local charity.  Once again I would like to thank this distillery for all their help and encouragement of my work.

The mezuzah case above was made from a Tamdhu sherry cask stave  for someone in Costa Rica.  This was the first mezuzah case I made from a named distillery wood and now planning to make more from the range of woods I have in stock.   Perhaps someone might want to consider whisky themed mezuzah cases for different rooms in their home?

I was lucky enough to find a branded cask end amongst wood collected from the Balvenie cooperage.  This wood was marked "A PAEZ  SA", showing that it was a sherry cask made by Antonio Paez in Jerez, Spain.  I have now used this wood to make three unique and individual items, one of which was a flight tray for two (sabbath) tea lights and two glasses commissioned as a birthday gift for a loved one.  The other items are a mezuzah case and a double sided  tray, one side holding two tea lights and the other side holds two tasting glasses - one on either side of the Paez branding.

Photos of these very special items are shown below.  Would you like to stake a claim for the mezuzah case or the branded tray with glasses?

As part of my plan to make a wider range of named distillery mezuzah cases, I have made a simple mezuzah case from Glenfiddich sherry cask wood.  I appreciate that personal requirements will vary because different sizes of scroll can be used in mezuzot cases so please feel free to discuss your needs with me and I will try to make something special and unique for you.  Perhaps you might even want to consider a range of different distillery wood mezuzot cases around your home?  I would love to discuss this further with you.
